Blog: Get set before you jet set this summer
Holidaymakers are being warned to pay closer attention to their travel policies before taking off this summer to make sure they’re properly insured.
Research by top UK independent insurance broking and risk managing firm Russell Scanlan has shown that there are five main pitfalls for consumers to watch out for when buying cover online.
“Start your cover straight away, when you’re sat in front of your laptop booking your getaway – not on the day your holiday starts,” said Development Director Mike Dickinson. “That way, if it’s cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, then you should be entitled to compensation.”
“Remember to also consider the health of any close relatives or friends when planning that much-needed break. Their pre-existing medical condition and any change in circumstances may mean you’re not protected if they take a turn for the worst and you have to return home earlier than planned,” he added.
Another important factor is to watch out for those expensive items. Mike explained: “Travel policies often mean a lower level of cover on single items like mobile phones, your cameras or a watch. So understand whether or not you have cover under your household policy for those items when they’re away from the home.”
“And pay close attention to the issue of operator failure or industrial action,” he added. “Strike action is, unfortunately becoming more commonplace, and if your policy doesn’t protect against this, then you could find yourself out of pocket for any costs you incur as a result.”
Finally, don’t assume that a last minute booking means an insurance purchase is unnecessary. “Many people believe that their existing household policy and European Health Insurance Card is adequate protection; it isn’t,” explained Mike.
“If your hotel room gets damaged, and you’re then sued, it will be down to you to foot the legal bills. You’ll also have to pay the price of any hospital fees if a family member is ill while you’re away. And if you lose your passport and miss your flight, you’ll have to cough up for a new ticket.”
“All this may sound obvious, but these are the things that we so often find people overlook,” added Mike. “So don’t let the simplest things catch you out this summer – take a little time out to protect yourself before you kick back and relax.”
