Blog: Insurance Cover Gets Washed Away

Insurance for Boston, Skegness & South Notts homes gets washed away

Homeowners, businesses and residents of Boston, Skegness and South Nottingham can’t have been too happy to wake up today and find they may struggle to insure their property due to the high risk of flooding. According to the Association of British Insurers, Boston and Skegness are top of the UK’s risk list, with 7,550 homes in danger; South Nottingham comes in eighth, with 5,043 homes.

Mike Dickinson, Development Director at independent insurance broking and risk managing firm Russell Scanlan, has a range of views on the matter. As an expert for one of the UK’s oldest heritage insurance companies (established in Nottingham in 1881 and with a range of clients across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands), he believes that:

  • The UK is in a unique position compared to other countries, as flooding is currently covered under standard  policies. Mike says that people here may in future have to seek specialist cover, but in the short term the Government is likely to once again force insurers to cover high-risk properties while it improves flood defences.
  • Consumers shouldn’t be afraid of challenging their insurance company if they believe they have been wrongly categorised as being at risk of flooding. In Mike’s experience, the systems used by insurers to identify the scale of the problem can be inconsistent, with some using highly sophisticated modelling techniques, and others taking a far less scientific approach.
  • A reputable insurance broker will always be in the best position to give impartial advice to anyone facing a flood risk problem. With the support of a professional who knows the market, Mike says you’ll have someone to fight your corner, negotiate on your behalf, and help you understand the technical details to get the best deal at the best price.
