1881 - Company Founded

Company established by Irishman, Philip Scanlan, who comes to Nottingham from Dublin to marry.

Early 1900s

Henry Russell becomes a business partner, and Russell Scanlan is adopted as the firm’s official name.

Records suggest that Boots the Chemist was an early client, with policy documents insuring the now global firm against war time disruption.

1960s

Henry Russell’s son, Bill Russell, joins the firm.

The company is, at this stage, entirely paper-based; hand-written ledgers, renewal cards, policy records are all filled out by brokers on behalf of clients, and card indexes exist for each type of policy.

Early 1980s

Henry Russell passes away and his son, Bill, inherits the firm.

  • 1988 - Bryan Banbury joins the company as Account Handler.

1990s

The collapse of Lloyd’s of London has repercussions across the whole UK insurance market, including independent brokers.

Bill Russell sells his shares in the company to colleagues Ian Chaplin and Mike Timberlake.

Russell Scanlan sets up a niche insurance offer for the allotment sector.
