10 Steps to Cyber Security

cyber-attack

With the number and level of cyber attacks growing exponentially almost every organisation should consider the threats and possible impact that a cyber attack could have on their business.

These threats can come from a number of sources:

  • Cyber criminals
  • Competitors
  • Hackers
  • Employees

Businesses are increasingly reliant on technology for the communication, financial, production, systems and human aspects of their organisations. Information is the lifeblood of any business.

How well do you protect your technology and information from a malicious or accidental attack?

Have you assessed the true cost to your business if one of the following scenarios occurred?

  • The  theft or destruction of intellectual property or sensitive data
  • Inability to communicate by e-mail
  • Interruption to your manufacturing or production process
  • Employees accidentally or deliberately misusing data

Some very simple risk management techniques can be the start to a robust defence against the majority of these threats and risks. Research suggests that about 80% of known cyber attacks would have been defeated by embedding basic information security practices for your people, processes and technology.

The GESG (the information security arm of GCHQ) have prepared a document “10 steps to cyber security” that provides some fundamental advice to help you protect your business from this ever changing range of threats.
